Hey friends…

I love you too. I feel like I say this a lot, and yet I feel like I don’t say it enough. I know my blog is a bit different-ya never know what you’re gonna get-I mean, a BIG hair how-to turned into a cry for help on redemption, and you guys ALWAYS have my back. To quote Meg Ryan in You’ve Got Mail-
“The odd thing about this form of communication is that you’re more likely to talk about nothing than something. But I just want to say that all this nothing has meant more to me than so many somethings.”

I’m in the process of responding to every amazing comment and email because you put yourselves out there for me, and it’s not going unnoticed. I’m the meantime, some of my very favorite bloggers and friends have come to the rescue in their fabulous Louboutins and such!

When I asked my girl D at Dream Sequins to help me out while my head clears, she did-in lightning speed and fabulousity. She rocks and so does her blog. What she came up with is so BADASS…and perfect for me…as I move on from my past, and look towards my future. Thanks D! I can’t wait to dance on banquettes with you…(oh yeah, keep reading…)

D on REAL NEW YORKERS!!! (Yay! I learned so much. It’s not all like SATC? And I guess I need a metro card!) Hey, everyone! First of all, I want to thank Liz for giving me the opportunity to do a guest post on It’s Unbeweavable! I’m a huge fan of her blog, and am excited about her future move to New York, my home sweet home for over ten years now… Some of you may already call New York home, many of you have visited, and most of you have seen pop culture depictions of New York City. For my guest post, I thought I would highlight ten misconceptions about the city and its fabulous residents. Life in New York for me is definitely NOT like a Woody Allen movie, nor an episode of Sex and the City or Real Housewives of New York! And thank goodness, too…

(1) Attending Fashion Week is kind of a cattle call. What was once a trade only event, has turned into a media, celebrity-infested circus. And those of you who have attended shows in the past know that part of the awful part of being standing room only at a fashion show means waiting around for an hour or more to be admitted for a show that’s maybe 15 minutes tops. The best part of Fashion Week, in my humble opinion, are the afterparties; at least you can drink at afterparties!
(2) New York City is a whole lot more than Manhattan. The city is a collection of five unique boroughs, including The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. Miranda may bemoan her fate as a Brooklyn resident in Sex and the City movie, but real New Yorkers live everywhere, and I love hanging with my friends in all five boroughs! Brooklyn, by the way, has some super tony neighborhoods that my Mr. and I could never afford…

(3) Real New Yorkers take public transportation. Even though I am seriously addicted to taking cabs after a late night out, I rely on subways and buses to take me around town, especially during peak traffic times. Public transportation is the great equalizer in the city. Heck, even the Mayor takes the subway now and then!

(4) It may be expensive to live here, but there are plenty of great free and inexpensive ways to keep yourself occupied here, especially for you foodies! I do enjoy a Michelin starred fancy meal now and then, but cheap, good eats are what really excite me about living here. Where else can you find great Thai, French, Pakistani, Chinese and Italian on one city block? There’s also nothing like a hot slice of New York pizza– sorry, Chicago! (I picked this image of G.P-because I have great memories there…lol…sorry if this is not what you meant D! :) )
(5) Real New Yorkers complain… a lot but it’s just their way of telling you they care. I first noticed this when I moved here years ago– my friends in New York would complain about every little thing under the sun, from the weather, the rising cost of housing, the temperature of food to their love lives. Now at dinner parties, I might complain about a lot of things related to New York, but really, it’s my coded way of saying I wouldn’t live anywhere else…(6) Despite working hard and playing hard in New York, we find a lot of time for trashy TV, even shows that revolve around fictional depictions of New York, such as Gossip Girl, NYC Prep and Real Housewives of New York. Missed that last episode of American Idol or Dancing with the Stars? You can expect a New Yorker to keep you up to date on the latest and greatest. We watched it on DVR, just like you. :)
(7) For a city obsessed with great restaurants and convenient delivery services, a lot of New Yorkers spend time in their tiny kitchens cooking up a storm. This place is foodie paradise, and even though I don’t personally enjoy cooking, the Mr. loves expressing himself through food. And I’m happy to experience the fruits of his labor! Yum.

(8) New Yorkers may work hard, but of course, we play hard too. And often, the best parties take place during the work week, and not on weekends. I don’t party as hard as I did when I was younger, but I love discovering a new bar or club during the week. It’s kind of a fun surprise to find yourself dancing on a banquette on a random Monday night. Sometimes you find yourself in situations where you’re out on a “school night,” and wondering who these people are and what they are doing out so late on a school night. New York is full of people with interesting schedules. (9) New Yorkers secretly LOVE chain stores. Yes, you may be moving to the city from a suburb where stores like Home Depot and Bed Bath and Beyond rule strip malls. But, since stores like that have invaded the city, people have been wondering how they lived without them in the first place. Sometimes I like going to a store like Bed Bath and Beyond to wander the aisles when I feel homesick about my Southern California suburban life. I think a lot of people must feel the same way, as you can glimpse people with blissed out expressions on their faces at these stores.

(10) Don’t let anyone tell you that New Yorkers are rude! The New Yorkers I know are polite, civilized and helpful. We stop and help out with directions when we’re not in a rush. We open doors for people. When riding the subway, we offer up a seat to the elderly. When things get lost in cabs or in public places, we often contact the owner and find a way to return them to the owner. I’ve had two instances of strangers returning a lost wallet from a cab.

Did any of these surprise you? I’d love to hear your thoughts about some of your perceptions about New York and its residents…
xx D of Dream Sequins!

You KNOW I'm all over this one chickie – LOL!

Yup, NY'ers are not all rude, in fact they can be some of the most interesting people you will ever meet..many NY'ers are originally not from NYC, so there are even MORE great stories to tell…this is what makes the city so eclectic & diverse!

And – I HAVE had my handbag returned to me after stupidly leaving it in a taxi (and I wasn't even drunk – dumbass!). My number wasn't in it, so the sweet couple called my hairdresser (whose card was in my wallet) and she called ME to tell me these peeps had my bag!! I returned the favor by having my restaurant manager-friend hook them up at a sweet Italian resty – woot!

I've been here all my life and I can never get/learn/experience it enough..I heart me some serious NYC!

And yes – Mon/Tues are the best dayz to go out here…not the wknd!!

oh how fun! i wish i lived in NYC. Thanks Dream Sequins and elizabeth for a great post.

4 Dooder City August 2, 2009 at 10:41 pm

I am certainly a NYC resident. I think that people that visit stay around 42nd street and go to all the tourist hotspots and think nyc is such a crazy place but what they don't realize that you are just surrounding yourself with more tourists so of course it is hectic! Also always ask a local what they love to do and where their local watering hole is because it will give you a true taste of the city. Try something new in NYC something you've never eaten, done, or worn…just try it all!

5 Chelsea August 2, 2009 at 10:48 pm

I only lived there for a short year, but that city has a very special place in my heart. :)

this post makes me want to make a much-needed trip back! Amazing post!

10 liferehab August 3, 2009 at 2:42 am

New Yorkers are seriously some of the nicest people I know. My mom and I went last year and got so ridiculously turned around on the subway. We were so lost, but every person we asked was happy to help us. It was awesome! And the good – omg – to die for!

11 Mrs EyeCanSee August 3, 2009 at 3:20 am

What a great post from a true New Yorker! It's hard to think of places outside of their stereotypes, thanks for breaking the mold on this one!

12 Allison August 3, 2009 at 3:42 am

I think in all the years I've been going to New York, I have met maybe three rude New Yorkers – and everybody has a bad day, right?
I think there are definitely a lot of stereotypes about living in the city and being a New Yorker, and you've answered them beautifully and honestly :)
I love the part about public transportation too! Can you imagine paying for a cab to take you everywhere?!
I do wish that when people visited, they got off the beaten path a bit – didn't go by their tour books and just took a look around beyond Times Square – there is SO much to the city :)
Excellent post.
And Liz, I hope everything is better, darling. Love you! xo

13 Meg Fee August 3, 2009 at 4:17 am

all so true.

even i have found myself dancing on a banquette once or twice!

and yes to the chain stores because they make me feel like i'm home.

i do have to say that some new yorkers are unbelievably rude. but some texans are unbelievably rude–you'll get that wherever you go, you just happen to see more people here each and every day so, you may notice it more.

ps: i did take a break: me posting those pics and qotes that was my break (the posts were all prescheduled). but i'm coming back. slowly, easing in.

when is the big move?

14 Dream Sequins August 3, 2009 at 4:31 am

LOL. I just re-read this post and realized I sound like a stand in for the tourism board or something? I should add that I don't consider myself a true New Yorker, even after my ten plus years here… But I have learned a lot about them living and observing them in their native habitat ;)

Thanks for posting this Liz! And thanks for reading….

15 modediktat August 3, 2009 at 4:46 am

Hey sweetie,
I thought I did already but anyway, going to add your fabulous blog to my blog roll today! Thanks so much for your lovely and overwhelming comment on my blog! It means so very much!!!!! Feel very hugged!

WOW – D. did a great job and LOL to her previous comment :) I went to NY twice and hope to return very soon. It's the most exciting place in the world. I can remember HOW very small I felt between all the skyscrapers and the huge plates on the pavement…. And how impressed I was about the pure and very strong energy which seems to be coming straight from the earth through the pavement :) The city that doesn't sleep.

Wishing you fantastic week ahead!
much love, sofie

16 Carlotta August 3, 2009 at 5:28 am

amazing post from 2 of my fav bloggers!!! first of all I love that quote since You've got mail is my fav movie ever ( I think I've watched it more that 200 times..) and I love that "guide" nobody knows NY better that newyorkers!! have a great week ..besos!!

17 E August 3, 2009 at 5:48 am

I'm surprised real New Yorkers cook so much. It makes sense, given how expensive it must be to live there, but I am surprised. That's wonderful your husband cooks – mine does, too :-)

18 brooke August 3, 2009 at 5:58 am

i need a trip to new york immediately…if i could live there i wouldn't hesitate to start packing um.now!

19 thefatandskinnyonfashion August 3, 2009 at 6:13 am

All of these points are so true. I try to explain this to my friends and they don't understand it. All they know about NY is what they see on tv.

20 Marjorie August 3, 2009 at 6:34 am

I had to laugh at #9, because an NYC-dwelling friend of mine literally BEGS to be taken to Target whenever she comes to visit. She always jokes that she could walk out her door and find 5 different kinds of caviar within a block of her home, but can't for the life of her find a bucket to mop her floors with. Lol!

21 ♥ H ♥ August 3, 2009 at 6:48 am

You've been tagged on my blog ;)

Great post btw D!

22 Lindsay [Bella Cene'] August 3, 2009 at 6:49 am

What a fantastic [and informative] post! I've never been to New York but I would LOVE to go!

23 Confessionelle August 3, 2009 at 7:34 am

I LOVE NEW YORK!! Thanks for the post, reading this makes me want to move there myself! I visted there several weeks ago and I was really disappointed to fly back to boring Seattle. NY is so exciting and the place gives you energy. It seems like there is always something to do there any time of day.

And you are right, most of the New Yorkers I encountered were very courteous! :-D

24 Kristin August 3, 2009 at 7:39 am

What a fabulous look into the real New York! Ahhhhhh, I want to go back now!!

25 Pinky August 3, 2009 at 7:43 am

Great post! As a New Yorker I just wanted to reiterate that we are very polite and nice when NOT in a rush. Unfortunately, we almost always are. =/
Also people need to understand that if they're standing in the middle of a very busy street with their heads up trying to take a picture, they shouldn't be surprised when people bump into them and scowl. Have some common sense, people! Other than that we're nice =)

26 J-Diggety August 3, 2009 at 7:58 am

Oh, how I heart NYC :)

27 Tiffany August 3, 2009 at 8:19 am

fabulous post! I love visiting New York and am lucky that my sister lives there so I get to experience it through someone that lives there and not just the touristy parts. Love this and am really trying to plan a trip back there soon!

28 Brunch at Saks August 3, 2009 at 8:35 am

I love this post! Thanks for giving us some insight to NYC! :) XOXO

29 The Haute-Shopper August 3, 2009 at 9:08 am

I think D's observations are spot-on and I think most people have huge misconceptions about people from big cities in general, whether it's NYC, London, Paris or Tokyo (ok, Tokyo is actually as nuts as people think). I guess it's just a given, considering how movies and TV shows tend to focus on the extreme, but people forget that locals in any city are just like everyone else to an extent, trying to live their lives.

Hope you're doing ok and have a fab week!

30 Lisa August 3, 2009 at 9:19 am

Ahh, I love this post! Thanks for sharing all of the inside info on NYC. I was actually born in NY but I left when I was 2. I NEED to visit NYC sometime soon!

34 Diana August 3, 2009 at 9:59 am

when i stayed in ny, the most beautiful place for me was brooklyn, too! thanks for closing the barriers to the images we see on television and in films!

35 Annie August 3, 2009 at 10:17 am

i've been to NYC one time, a few years back as a tourist ;) so many people!! i didn't have any rude encounters. i would love to get back and visit sometime!
fun post ladies!

36 OceanDreams August 3, 2009 at 10:17 am

I enjoyed this very much, I was glad to hear that New Yorkers are not rude because I think that does get said a lot, so I am glad that you cleared it up! Also, my BF lived in NY for multiple years and he has said much the same as you just said, thanks for this!

37 adin_22 August 3, 2009 at 10:28 am

I love New York!!!!I agree with u…NY has the nicest people….:)

38 TheBeautyFile August 3, 2009 at 10:43 am

I love this post…so fun…New York New York. Oh how I love & hate thee at the same time! I love all the fun things you give me, but am so happy to live outside the city for some peace and quiet! New Yorkers aren't rude…they're just honest! {jaded & always in a rush…in a good way!!}

39 Gabbi August 3, 2009 at 10:57 am

Such a great guest spot! I love NY and had this brief feeling of being there as I read. Papaya dog is a huge fave or mine also… missing it now.

40 Shopn'Chomp August 3, 2009 at 10:59 am

Dream, I love this post! Thank u both :)

Having been to NYC, I can definitely say y'all are nice. Being that you've been on both coasts, is the hate for L.A as bad as they say?

41 Ali August 3, 2009 at 11:22 am

You and I are opposites! I'm a New Yorker who now resides in SoCal. And I've gotta agree with all that you said. Sounds like you've got a good grasp on NYC lady! Nice post.

42 Kellie August 3, 2009 at 11:25 am

I have ALWAYS wanted to go to NY and now I want to go even more. :)

And as for your last post, I just now read it b/c I don't get online much over the weekends, but I think you need to forgive yourself somehow. I did awful things to my ex. I treated him like shit. We are now both happily married to other people. I believe the fact of the matter is that you guys just weren't meant to be. And it is painful to relive the past and what you did, but you are just torturing yourself. You can't and shouldn't live in the past. Learn from it and please try to forgive yourself b/c you deserve all the happiness in the world love cheeks. :)

xoxo

43 lisa August 3, 2009 at 11:27 am

Great post! The New Yorkers I've met have been super warm and friendly. The trashy tv comment made me chuckle a bit: The last time I was in NYC, I stayed with a friend who lived in Brooklyn, and he would DVR every episode of Jeopardy from the week and watch them all in one go.

44 bananas. August 3, 2009 at 11:47 am

i love this post for so many reasons but the first (and main) reason is because it's NYC to the fullest. i heart NYC. i truly believe i was born to live there. why i don't is a-whole-nother deal. thanks for keeping us informed on all things NYC. and as for you miss lizzy marie, what?! NYC!?! i'm so jealous.

45 drollgirl August 3, 2009 at 11:56 am

oh, you are making me miss new york SOMETHING FIERCE!!!

i have only been once, and i loved it. so much great shopping, and architecture, and art, and food, and great transportation (unlike silly los angeles) and AND!!! i loved it there!

now i want to go back for a visit. wah.

46 Chelsea Talks Smack August 3, 2009 at 12:08 pm

ummm that picture of leighton is adorable.

47 InnyVinny August 3, 2009 at 12:11 pm

A lot of my preconcieved notions about NY were quashed when I went earlier this year. It's really a great city. If the weather were nicer, I'd probably move.

48 LiLu August 3, 2009 at 12:21 pm

Emphasis on "when we're not in a rush." I ALWAYS get touristas in my face when I am very, very obviously about 15 minutes late for work. WTF?

49 Savvy Gal August 3, 2009 at 1:28 pm

i used to visit nyc quite often and love all the restaurant delivery services. : )

50 Style Bite August 3, 2009 at 2:18 pm

Great post Dream Sequins. Whenever I visit NYC I am baffled by the whole work week late night partying thing. I mean…you guys leave to go out when I usually go to bed. And then you get up to go to work in the morning! wtf!

51 Chessa! August 3, 2009 at 2:56 pm

wee!!! I'm so glad that you see NY in ways so similar to the way that I see it:) I definitely don't think that we are rude..we're in a hurry:) and I love how many wonderful things you can find at every little corner…and I especially love the surprise of finding yourself at a great party or dinner in the middle of week:) it's just the most amazing place to live. and ps–I LOVE Home Depot:)

52 chicknamedhermia August 3, 2009 at 4:37 pm

Good to see you at least appearing in slightly better spirits!

And doll, I have a favour to ask, if you don't mind! I'm getting in touch with everyone on my blogroll to help me with a new Discover the Undiscovered Blogs project I'm trying to kick start!
Let's Hear It For The Little People!!lol!
Info is here: http://chicknamedhermia.wordpress.com/2009/08/03/discovering-the-undiscovered/

55 Jessica August 3, 2009 at 6:15 pm

I'm so going to Manhattan one day, and when that happens, stay tuned 'cos I'll contact you. Let's go eat at a posh resto together, and strut down fifth avenue in our dashing Manolos! :)

56 AsianCajuns August 3, 2009 at 6:22 pm

Liz, you are such a sweetie! And I'm so glad you have a blogger network of people to support you through this!
We love Dream Sequins too and we love her take on NY! Cath and I always dreamed about living there, but have only been as visitors a million times. We can't wait to hear your take on it when you move there!

57 Sher August 3, 2009 at 6:29 pm

Makes me want to visit NY again ;)

PS girlfriends are the best!

58 Elaine August 3, 2009 at 6:57 pm

I agree with Sher. I need to go back. This makes me forget about all the NY stereotypes from the media… Blasted media!!!

59 Gabby August 3, 2009 at 8:22 pm

I love this. I want Dream Sequins to post this on my blog too. Yes this exact post. Kthxsbai.

60 josie(bean) August 3, 2009 at 8:46 pm

Wooowee what a motivated career woman you are! And I love how you're moving east coast while I'm moving to socal, life just needs a change of pace! And a good one at that, I really think you'll love NY, esp. the fall and winter where it's probably one of my favorite places to be :)

61 Underfunded Heiress August 3, 2009 at 9:14 pm

Great to hear!

I've only been there once a few years ago and I found it great but so much faster than So cal, especially OC coastal!!

Great insight.

62 Sheena August 3, 2009 at 9:28 pm

Great post! New York is honestly THE place I want to visit next on a trip. I've heard so many stories about New York, the culture and the people that I feel like it's somewhere everyone should visit.

63 Polished Sense August 3, 2009 at 9:30 pm

Who doesn't love a little NYC? I mean if I could, I would (live there in a heartbeat) :) Lovely info here Elizabeth. I have to add, I have a lot of GG catching up to do, thank god for Hulu! The other funny thing is I won a LC LA Candy book, this close to dipping into it.

xoxo,
Jessica

64 Kristin August 3, 2009 at 9:35 pm

You've got another award from us fabulous lady!

65 freeteyme August 3, 2009 at 9:53 pm

hi girl! I have missed out on a lot of things going on with you =(… I hope things are looking better now… I'm here for you too *hugz*

66 K @ Blog Goggles August 4, 2009 at 2:40 am

Haha, your experience with New York sounds a lot more fun than mine :) Then again, I was working 24/7 and commuting to the burbs every day from Manhattan, so it was sort of a nightmare.

67 Jill Pilgrim August 4, 2009 at 4:45 am

Can I just say that at 27 I totally want to be Blair Waldorf? Is that sad?

68 Alianna August 4, 2009 at 8:00 am

I might sound like I'm tooting my own horn, but you basically just described Toronto too!

69 MizzJ August 4, 2009 at 6:49 pm

Oh you're so lucky, you're moving to NYC?! I've never been, but this post really makes me long to visit that fabled city.

70 saralovesshoes August 4, 2009 at 8:55 pm

oh i love NYC! i love getting an insider's view…though i still love gossip girl. :)

71 Wicked Halo August 5, 2009 at 5:43 am

Yes, New Yorkers are really friendly and helpful, I was pleasantly surprised to find, when I went there a few years ago, everyone was completely hands on and really eager to help! Don't let anyone tell you NYers are rude :)

72 WendyB August 5, 2009 at 8:28 am

Fuck you, Dream Sequins, don't call me polite! Okay, seriously, great post :-)

Except you're more likely to see me in a subway map dress than on the subway.

73 kathleen August 12, 2009 at 12:54 am

This is awesome. That's all. :)
